48hr Film Competition

A couple of weeks ago it was time to sacrifice a weekend and jump into a frenzy of filming and editing. Yep, a 48 film hour challenge, organized by the Smoke & Mirrors post-production house.

At 7pm on friday evening the concept ‘Luck’ was revealed to the contestants, and with such a short deadline we could use plenty of it

After shooting on Saturday and editing on sunday we were pretty happy with some of the scenes and submitted the entry.

Last month I spent a week keying and cutting footage of well known footballers (Henri, Giggs etc.) for the soon to be launched Reebok website.
Now I’m not much of a football fan but I’ll post a link as soon as it’s up…..

VFX for Short Film – Julia

My latest project has been compositing and visual effects for a short film that is to be screened at the ‘British Academy of Film & Television Arts’ Cinema in London.
‘Julia’ was directed by David C. Balch and is currently in the final stages of completion.
I have yet to see the final cut but the roughs were looking good, and I look forward to seeing it on the big screen and festival circuit in the near future.

Timetoast – new timeline RIA

Well today’s the day. My twin brother, and general nethead Daniel Todd, has released his new RIA into the wild.

Timetoast is a new online timeline creation tool. You can create a timeline and add pictures, text and links to any number of events and embed it into your own page or blog. The frameworks implemented under the hood are Rails and Adobe Flex.

EDIT 22/7/08 – Timetoast has been doing tremendously well.
It’s made the front page of delicious and been featured on the front page of lifehacker and hackyourday.
The RIA specialists and developers of RUBY, 37signals, have also posted a small interview with Daniel on their product blog

Extreme Drinks Packaging Design

I’ve just finished up a package design for Extreme Drinks that should be hitting your shelves in the new year. The design was an update for their Aquavitamin range, which is made up of 3 different vitamin enhanced flavoured waters. The flavours are raspberry, orange & passion and lemon & lime. I’ve slapped the raspberry flavour onto a 3D model for your viewing pleasure……

Webcam Application (Processing)

This is a screenshot from a little application I built with Processing. It takes the data from your webcam in realtime, and turns you into a bunch of atoms.The mouse controls the size of the atoms on the horizontal axis and a click will render out the current frame as a jpeg.

I’d never used processing before but had heard such good things about it at Flash on the Beach, that I decided to have a tinker.If you have Java installed you can download the standalone application here, or if you feel like downloading Processing you can download the source code here-> (right click, and save as).

Obviously you’ll need a webcam to get this to work and if you are on a mac it should run without any problems, I haven’t had the chance to test it on a PC so if anyone has any problems, please let me know.

Flash on the Beach 2007, Brighton

So, so. Time for an update.
November saw the return of the annual Flash on The Beach, which was an absolute joy. Good to catch up with a few old faces and meet a few new ones.
Some of my personal favourites were 3D motion artist GmunK (Bradley Grosh) and Mario Klingeman’s lecture on his flash based photoshoppy magic wand techniques.
Eric Natzke (click for his Flickr) and Jared Tarbell also deservedly got major claps from the crowd, for their stunning mathematical visualizations.
The two sessions that really grabbed my attention, though, were Joshua Davis‘ ‘Dynamic Abstraction’, and Rob Chiu’s ‘Cinematic Motion Design’. Rob Chiu’s ‘18th GNER LIFF trailer’ was one of the inspirations for me to start getting into After Effects and motion graphics work, so it was great to finally see the guy speak.

I had an exceptional few days, full of unexpected delights and inspiration. Thanks to the organisers for putting a conference together that caters equally to the codeheads and designers alike. See y’all next year!
